A development company confirmed Amazon.com Inc. is in talks to lease its massive Kenosha industrial building near Interstate 94 for a last-mile shipping facility that will fill vans with packages to be shipped to customers’ doorsteps.

Pending final approvals from the city of Kenosha in early April, that Amazon facility could be up and running by May 15, said Aaron Martell, executive vice president of Logistics Property Co. The Illinois developer would lease to Amazon a 748,300-square-foot speculative facility west of I-94, Martell confirmed to Kenosha officials last week.

“It’s exciting for us and for Kenosha based on the fact that we know this is going to bring in a lot of jobs and create revenue,” Martell said.

The facility would have about 300 workers. Seasonal employment could increase to 500.

It represents a “last-mile” operation that many online retailers are adding to their distribution networks. Those facilities are the last warehouse a package visits before being delivered to the final customer nearby.

The Kenosha facility would receive limited shipments of pre-sorted products from larger semi-trucks, and use only about 12 of the building’s 142 total truck docks, Martell said. From there, boxes would be loaded onto vans for shipping during the day. Amazon would park about 675 vans in the building on nights when they’re not in use, Martell said.
